Study Duration and Target Levels

Classes are divided into up to 8 levels, from beginner to advanced. The learning goals for each level are outlined below.

Learning Goals Overview

Elective Required Courses

Elective classes are offered for students at the beginner to intermediate level, tailored to their career paths and goals.
Elective classes are held twice a week (90 minutes per session).
A preference survey is conducted at the start of each term to determine which elective courses students would like to take.
Please note that some classes may not be held if there is insufficient enrollment.

Business Elective

Includes classes that teach the skills and knowledge needed for job hunting in Japan, as well as classes that teach the culture, business customs, and workplace rules specific to Japanese companies, for use once you've secured a position.

Japanese Language Elective

Take JLPT preparation or BJT preparation classes tailored to your level.

Overview

Classes are held Monday through Friday each week. There are no classes on public holidays or days designated as school closures.
There are 2 class periods per day. Each period is 90 minute
Depending on your assigned class, you will be placed in either a morning or afternoon class.
Each class has a maximum of 20 students.

Placement Test (Class Assignment Test)

At ISI, we conduct an online placement test before enrollment. You can take it from a computer or smartphone.
This lets you find out your class placement as soon as you arrive in Japan, so you can start student life smoothly.
We also conduct a survey about your Japanese learning history and your goals after graduation, so you can be placed in a class matching both your Japanese level and your objectives.
If you feel you've been placed in a class that doesn't match your Japanese level, we offer a designated period during which you can request a class change. Please consult with your teacher.

About Grading and Evaluation

Grades are given to students who remain enrolled through the last day of the term.

Proficiency is assessed using formats suited to each subject, including paper-based tests, online tests, and oral examinations.
Report cards cover 8 learning areas — Listening, Reading, Conversation, Writing, Grammar, Vocabulary, Pronunciation, and Assignments — along with an Overall Grade. Each is scored on a 5-tier scale: A+ (90–100 points), A (80–89 points), B (70–79 points), C (60–69 points), and D (59 points or below).
Each student can check their term grades on the student portal site (Campusmate-J).

Level Advancement

Advancement to the next level is determined by the grade evaluation conducted at the end of each term.
Students who achieve an Overall Grade of C or higher may advance to the next level.
In the case of a D grade, the school will assign additional coursework. Whether the student may advance is then decided based on the results of that coursework and a review by the school's academic committee. If advancement is not approved, the student will repeat the same course content.
Note that, at the school's discretion, students may also be permitted to skip a level.

Graduation Requirements

Students who meet all of the following criteria will be certified as having graduated in the month their course is completed. Upon graduation certification, a diploma will be awarded. The completion month for each course is as follows:

1-Year Course (including students who changed courses): The final month of the 4th term from the term learning began (March, June, or September)
2-Year Course (including students who changed courses): The final month of the 8th term from the term learning began (March, June, September, or December)
An overall attendance rate of 80% or higher from the time of enrollment through the end of the month prior to course completion
Confirmation of a passing score, achieved during enrollment in Japan, on a Japanese-language proficiency exam recognized by the Ministry of Justice, at a level equivalent to A2 or higher on the reference framework for Japanese-language education
JLPT N4, J.TEST Grade E, EJU 200 points, TOP-J Beginner A-4, NAT-TEST Level 4, J-Cert Life/Vocational Intermediate, STBJ Standard Business Japanese Test BJ4, JLCT JCT3, JPT 370 points or higher, Japan Online Test (JOT) JT4, or Japrise A2 or higher
An Overall Evaluation of C or higher on the final exam from the term prior to course completion
Completion of the full duration of your enrolled course by the time of graduation
Submission of any additional documents designated by the school, in addition to the above requirements
