Kyoto Summer Course 2019

About the Course

  • Age requirement: 16 years old and above.
  • Intensive Japanese morning lessons from absolute beginners to early intermediate levels (CEFR: A1~B1).
  • Class schedule: 8:50 ~ 12:00. Only Japanese is used in class!
  • Cultural experiences and excursions in the afternoons and weekends.
  • Select from 3 courses in either July or August! (Included activities are different!)

We’ve arranged lots of different activities for you to enjoy, so you can experience Japan’s cultural traditions and modern technology firsthand.

Is there somewhere in Kyoto you wanted to go, but didn’t get the chance earlier? Want to go somewhere we visited again? On the first week of the group tour, you’ll have the chance to visit a place you’re interested in with like-minded students! You’ll form a group, create a schedule and go there! Create unforgettable memories with your friends, and try out the Japanese you learnt in class. You’ll make a presentation about it as well. We’ll reserve a taxi for you so you can explore Kyoto in comfort.

3. Meet Students from All Over the World!
Study alongside students from all over the world. Make friends across the globe with ISI!

  • Yukata Kimono! (1)
  • One-way tickets to the activity locations + a free ICOCA card! (We’ll give you the ICOCA card at Orientation.) (2)

1 Students on the Premium and Standard Courses receive a free Yukata!
2 An ICOCA card is a prepaid smart card that allows you to use most public transport (metro, trains, buses, monorail) in Japan. You can also use it in some shops and restaurants. We’ll give you one charged with 1,500 yen.

Course Fees Do Not Include:

  • Flights to and from Japan, Accommodation, Airport pick up, Commuter pass from accommodation to the school, Travel Insurance, Food (except when part of an activity).
  • Free participation activities (please pay the entrance fee and transportation fees yourself).

Manga/Anime Character Workshop for Beginners (Optional)

  • 50,000 JPY (Teaching Materials Included. Commute Fare Not Included)

Have you ever wanted to be a Manga artist? Do you enjoy reading and drawing comics? ISI has expanded its Summer Course to provide students the experience of learning Manga and Anime. The workshop focuses on designing characters and the world they live in. These characters can be used in stories, games and even marketing materials. The course is for people who wish to develop and visualize a new world through illustration.

Class Topics
1. Get familiar with illustration tools
2. Let’s think about character design
3. Let’s draw!
4. Paint and add shadows to add realism
5. Draw the background, props and weapons
6. Try to create more variations
7. Let’s try animation
8. Create your business card, calendar, and a background image for your mobile phone
Japanese Skills Drawing Skills
If you are participating in ISI’s Summer Course, you are welcome to join! The teacher will speak in easy-to-understand Japanese, and an English and Chinese-speaking Teaching Assistant will also be available. The course is for students who are new to Manga/Anime studies. If you enjoy character design, storytelling or drawing, you will enjoy this class.
Class Capacity 30 people, on a first-come-first-served basis.

FAQ

  • Do I need to bring anything to class?
    No. Everything you need will be available in the classroom, but it may be helpful to bring your own pencils and notebook/sketchbook.
  • I don’t know how to draw, but I’m interested in Manga/Anime. Can I join?
    Yes, anyone can join, from casual enthusiasts to Manga/Anime Otaku.
  • My Japanese is very basic. Can I still participate?
    The teacher will speak in easy-to-understand Japanese and an English and Chinese-speaking Teaching Assistant will also be in the classroom.
